Suzuki sensei notes from Riggs

  • Shittai, shikko — shikaden (and okuden) is 3x always. This is because shikaden is coming down as a simplification of daisu. In shin no gyo, you’re serving tea to kami sama, so you will of course 3x scoot. Shin is bondate + daitenmoku, so in both of those temae, you scoot 3x. He said same for karamono, it comes from gyo no gyo where you do the same.
    • However, you 2x in konarai like kinin hikae, serving sweets, etc because that is about PEOPLE, not about TEMAE
    • He specifically said it’s not about the dougu necessarily, but it’s because of the temae and the occasion. Shikaden being preparation for doing shin no gyo, you do the same
  • Nijiru across ita in Sanjo-ita because the Nakaita comes from Buddhist food table, don’t want to put foot on food
  • But in Daime: only nijiru into and out of daime if there is a de-ro. This is because the temae dougu goes right there, and you don’t want to put your foot there. If you have sumiro or mukogiri, you don’t put dougu in the same spot as dero, so you don’t need to nijiru across the line
  • TODO Email Suzuki-sensei asking about getting sumi same way as NY does ➕ 2023-04-26 📅 2023-05-24

Kristina notes from CU Tankokai 20th Anniversary seminar

  • Sukigi-gama
    • Kiri Sotan
    • Magnolia Sen no rikyu
    • Cherry 7th chikuso
    • Plum ennosai?
  • Sukigi handling
    • Always turn from left to right
    • While away burnt sides (those facing to the fire) should face right
    • Stack one on another
  • Warigeiko from various teachers notes
    • To refold fukusa in the beginning of temae for chashaku pick up the end with your palm  cup facing up, so you don’t have to adjust your hand position for holding it in a triangle
    • Pick up chashaku for purifying from the sides and then turn your wrist, don’t twist it with fingers!!!!
    • Don’t hide the ends of fukusa when purifying chashaku, align them with the top and pinch with the thumb
      • Dario note: this means that your fukusa isn’t totally even. Your thumb, now on the corner of the fukusa, will not be able to be centered.
      • Suzuki-sensei: “It’s difficult, but you must not shy away from it because it is difficult. It is kata. Sometimes things are just that way. You must just learn it.”
  • Karioki Chawan Position the same as in the end with kensui
  • Kinin Kiyotsugu Usucha
    • Bring in takatsuki, sit far from guest place your hands under and lean forward to place takatsuki to the left of you (right side for the guest)
    • TODO Natsume, only rehold 3h from daisu. Tana is 1h. ➕ 2023-04-26 ✅ 2023-04-27
    • Kinin: Osaki ni kansha hold with left the stand and support with right the tray
    • Otomo: sits on right side tatami to serve tea
    • Kinin places dai to the left and osaki ni then heri uchi and temae chodai then dai on the right and take the bowl to drink place back on dai and move heri Soto in front of you to haiken and leave there
    • Otomo asks for haiken
    • Kinin turns the bowl and passes to otomo and keep the dai heri soto on the left but higher then higashiki
    • Otomo goes to pick their bowl, brings dai back places it to the right knee and takes theirs to their left, turn Kinin bowl and place in front of teishu
    • Places bowl in front and osaki ni, and temae chodai
    • Because Kinin won’t drink from that bowl at any circumstance
  • So opening the fusuma is the length of fukusa, gyo and shin are respectively lower
  • Nonoji don’t move your body until you finished the movement, then move with whole body
  • Karamono
    • Karamono lid goes around the bowl
    • Put enough amount of tea in chaire to scoop easily while sukuidashi
    • U shape opening the lid move with the whole body , not just your arm
    • Three sweets for chaji
    • Purifying chaire in shikaden is the same arms position but lean your body forward, so that makes it lower, don’t just lower your arms!!!
    • Name for split haiken ask during karamono, gyo no gyo is warigoe
  • Taking hishaku from kensui pick with R so it touches your palm and spin your wrist so the cup faces up, and then with L move the end of hishaku parallel to you - no catapult this way
  • Kinran is not good for viewing karamono, shoha or donsu is better (softer fabrics)
  • Chuko meibutsu < meibutsu < o-meibutsu
    • Denrai - who owned it
  • Bondate
    • must be higher ranking chaire
    • Pull the tray forward, turn to imae, and then take the chaire(!)
    • Index finger to open fukusa - so
      • Thumb - shin and gyo
    • Rehold the tray deeper to purify
    • Don’t slide chaire on the bon, hold it with both hands until very end
    • Raku must be precious, since it’s the highest temae you can use raku (Chojiro etc)
    • Reaching for chaire lid on the bon or chashaku keep the chaire above the rim of the bowl
    • Tap at 9 inside the bowl, supporting the bowl with left
    • TODO Imagine not pretend that you have all dougu, you need to coordinate your toriawase this way and learn ➕ 2023-04-26 ✅ 2023-04-27
    • (*) Karamono you take chaire from mizusashi shomen and turn to imae, bondate you turn first and then take chaire
    • Rehold the mage lid deeply to put down on the side of mizusashi
    • You turn from kyakutsuki to imae to purify the bon because you don’t wanna do the same thing in the same position (folding in gyo)
    • What is placed kantsuki for haiken stays heri soto during haiken
      • TODO Dario note: this isn’t true! shin no gyo, everything goes kantsuki, but chashaku + shifuku go heriuchi (unless Glenn haiken method is wrong) ➕ 2023-04-25
    • First guest returns chaire on the bon and then momide and place chaire kantsuki
  • Meibutsu
    • Gyo no gyo daisu - chuko-meibutsu or meibutsu, times of rikyu or ones he chose
    • Shin no gyo - o-meibutsu
    • Karamono and bon date - denrai, meibutsu is too much. does not need denrai.
    • Pay attention to ranking
  • Leaving after haiken - shifuku goes on upper left corner of a rectangle tray

Questions

  • TODO How do you make tea for rikyuki? How about for more general memorial? ➕ 2023-04-24 ✅ 2023-04-27
    • Didn’t answer it, but moved the question to Kenchashiki
