Glenn and Suzuki-sensei disagree on this.
Glenn’s way
Chasen should be pretty high up. It should almost come up to hira-demae chasen position (furo), and laterally, it should almost be himado-mae.
In this way, when you place the hishaku on the kensui for conversation in ro, the chasen is well out of range of the hishaku go.
Suzuki-sensei’s way
Chasen should be directly right of kensui (not upper-right), and rather close. See 2023-04-24-CU-Tankokai-20th notes.
In this way, the hishaku go is still well out of range, but this is because the chasen is lower than the go.
