Opening hiroma fusuma should be done a fukusa’s width above the floor. In shin and gyo temae, it is lower.

Koma (shoji) doors

(These notes come from my shoddy recollection of Ula’s okeiko).

Koma often have different doors, where one piece of the paper is pushed inward instead of having a specific hikite. These are handled with 2h, and generally you cross your arms to do so.

Assume a mawari-sado. To open:

  • L pulls open half-way using the “hikite”, arms going across the body.
  • R finishes the move lower on the door (I think). Door should be opened totally flush, not leaving room to pinch.

To close:

  • Using R (crossing the body), reach around the front of the door and pull the “hikite” half-way.
  • L completes the movement, pushing the “hikite” from inside until the door is flush.
