• 膝行(しっこう / shikkō) — literally “knee movement”, to move forward.
  • 膝退(しったい / shittai) — literally “knee retreat”, to move back.

From Suzuki Soukei Sensei, 2023-04-24-CU-Tankokai-20th:

  • For both okuden and shikaden, shittai / shikko is always 3x. This is because shikaden is a simplification of daisu.
  • In Shin no Gyo, you’re serving tea to kami-sama, so of course you must always scoot 3x.
    • Shin no Gyo is a combination of Bondate and Daitenmoku, so you follow suit in these two temae and still scoot 3x.
    • The same is true for Karamono, because it comes from Gyo no Gyo where you do 3x scoot.
    • Note: The other two shikaden, Wakin and Satsubako, don’t have shittai / shikko.
  • However, you shittai / shikko only 2x in konarai (throughout all four Kinin temae, also when serving sweets at chakai, etc) because it is about people, not about temae.

Note: He specifically said that it’s not about the dougu, but the temae. We aren’t doing this in reverence of the karamono chaire, but in reverence of Shin no Gyo where you serve kami-sama. (Not much explicit mention from him about Gyo no Gyo, but I assume it follows suit).
