Uchizumi

For the following seven temae:

Imai position is on the inner ro corner. Tip of hishaku handle when resting in the kama should also be tangent to uchizumi.

NOTE

If you do uchizumi in ro, you do Nakajimai in furo.

Sotozumi

For all other konarai, and for all shikaden, imai position is sotozumi. Tip of hishaku handle should also be sotozumi.

Dairo

Aim at the inner corner of the rodan.

Suzuki Soukei Sensei:

If that’s too far (e.g. to reach the hishaku on your left), you may aim at even farther to kantsuki.

Gyo

For Gyo no Gyo and Daien no Sou, imai is half-way between the corner of the daisu, projected to the tatami edge, and the corner of the ro.

Hishaku positioning is tangent to the sotozumi outer line, not beyond it. (ref glenn)

Shin

For Shin no Gyo and Daien no Shin, imai is all the way pointing to the corner of the daisu, projected to the tatami edge.

Hishaku positioning is tangent to the sotozumi outer line, not beyond it. (ref glenn)
