Honjimai comes directly from daisu. Nakajimai is intentionally different from daisu, making honjimai more formal. suzuki
How to…
Nakajimai
After wiping chashaku and placing it onto the chawan, without pom-poming:
- 1h R move chawan to L of center
- 1h R move chaki to R of center
- Pom-pom, koshi fukusa
Nakajimai can only be done for the seven basic temae:
- Hakobi Usucha
- Hakobi Koicha
- Tana Usucha
- Tana Koicha
- Tsutsumibukusa
- Otsubukuro
- Nagao Chaire
Honjimai (Konarai)
After wiping the chashaku and placing it onto the chawan:
- Pom-pom, koshi fukusa
- 1h R move chaki back to original position
- 3h move chawan back to original position
Honjimai (Shikaden, Okuden)
- [?] TODO Do you refer to the closing position for shikaden, okuden as honjimai? Or are they their own thing? ask-glenn ➕ 2023-05-10
- I suppose I could ask… but this feels too pedantic.
When to do nakajimai vs honjimai
If a temae is honjimai during furo, it is sotozumi in ro. More color:
- You are only allowed to do nakajimai for the seven basic temae.
- However, you are also only allowed to do nakajimai in Hiroma or Yojohan.
- So, it is preferred to take the option when you have it, and always do nakajimai in hiroma if it’s one of the seven.
Exceptions
(ref glenn) There are two cases when you could do nakaijimai that you shouldn’t.
- If you are using kaejawan, and the kyaku gives it back to you to clean, you will need to leave room for it by katte. In this case, you should not pull the kensui when cleaning the omojawan (meaning that kyaku need to bring the bowl back to you before you take the chashaku). For this, you do honjimai.
- From Shimura-sensei, “Nakajimai is for the teishu.” If you are ever in a situation where you are doing tea on behalf of someone else (e.g. the dougu owner is sekishu), you should do honjimai out of respect. Only you get to lower your own stature, not someone else.
(ref glenn) Don’t change it if you make an oopsies. If you mean to do nakajimai in koicha but forget, stay consistent and do honjimai for usucha.
