  • Walking in and out with the mizusashi is four steps — two straight forward, R back a bit, L to meet. Same as furo sumidemae when walking with the haiki.

  • When standing from this diagonal position (either after placing the mizusashi in usucha or taking it out at the end for usucha or koicha), turn your body as you stand so you’re facing forward when you hit fully vertical

  • Mizusashi should be bisected by the shikiita on the left and in the center between the shikiita and the byobu

  • Mizusashi should be naname (kind of tenari)

  • Futaoki goes directly below the mizusashi (not from mizusashi no shomen, but rather straight down along the tatami from the mizusashi)

  • Hishaku will be tight, deal with it

  • Other dougu goes where it would be on the right if the mizusashi was there, ie in the center of the right space and in front of the shikiita

  • Handle mizusashi lid with 2 hands

  • Shifuku goes above the kensui, like daisu

  • [?] TODO What is the purpose for moving it to center? Not warmth. In/yo reason? Also, we’re supposed to break the kane for chasen and chaire, fit them within a single lane? Making them more in, closer to the furo? ➕ 2023-04-29

POINTO

Q: What is the purpose for moving the furo to the center?

glenn doesn’t know. He pointed out that this temae can be done any time of year, not just October, so “moving the fire to the center to be closer to the guest” doesn’t make sense as a reason.

Nakaoki can only be done in hiroma.

This originally comes from suzuki . I didn’t get a good reason why. I asked glenn , and he concurred that it can only be done in hiroma, but we couldn’t think of a good reason why or why not.

My personal thoughts (confusion?):

  • Size is not a problem. Nothing spills over onto the kyaku-datami like it does in Nagashidate.
  • Perhaps it’s too wabi to be done in a koma. Similarly to how we pair Honjimai with koma and Nakajimai with hiroma, maybe we don’t want to “double up” the wabi.
  • However, doing hakobi nakaoki in a hachijo feels very strange.

Perhaps it’s related to Juuden, given that Nakaoki originates from a daisu temae?
