Futaoki position

There is a relationship between the futaoki shomen, the hishaku, and the chakin. Generally, they should point in the same direction.

suzuki’s current teaching:

  • Before placing onto the jiita, rotate your thumb (futaoki shomen) all the way to the right. Hishaku goes on the same direction.
  • Chakin goes tenari.
    • (Not quite the same orientation, but close.)

glenn agrees with this, but he was originally taught:

  • When you take the hishaku, but before putting the lid on the futaoki, you turn the futaoki parallel to your body so you can put the chakin parallel.

Placing shifuku down

Current teaching is to place shifuku on tenita using L, on the left like usual for square tana. This is like how you do it in Daisu.

However, glenn was originally taught that you place down with R. His thought process:

  • Consider Daisu. Left is left, right is right. Center is still usually right handed as well.
  • Hishaku and futaoki go onto that same position, and those are done with the right hand.
