This is one of three deeply related temae:

This temae and Tsutsumibukusa are very wabi, and should never be used with a tana. The temae coming directly from Rikyu, and not using a chaire, make them very wabi. (IIRC, the original otsubukuro was sewn by Rikyu’s wife?) iwama
Nagao Chaire, on the other hand, is originally how all karamono chaire used to be. This is not wabi, and should really use a tana. iwama
From Suzuki-sensei in Midorikai little book transcription: dealing with the otsubukuro in ro:
- Pull off the bag
- Leave on your left hand
- Fold the top down
- Rehold from side with R thumb and index finger
- Then take in L hand “like normal” for otsubukuro atsukai and place down.

Suzuki-sensei says the opposite from the book for tying. The book says left-left (left ear over right, tie, then left ear over right again and tie). Suzuki-sensei says to do either right-right or right-left. I like to do it like chaire.
- First one, R goes over L.
- After this tie, ears will be on upper-left and lower-right.
- Then, bend L ear over to R, and tie R around L.
- This should result in a horizontal knot. If you do it R-R, you’ll end up with a vertical knot.
