Also Okeiko-Glenn-2024-07-14 has good gyakugatte notes.
From Suzuki Soukei Sensei in Midorikai little book transcription — Ro
Suzuki-sensei says that the lid position relative to the chawan follows shin / gyo / sou.
- 3’ is shin, reserved for chaire lid
- 4:30’ is gyo, reserved for natsume lid
- 6’ is sou, reserved for all non-standard chaki and for gyakugatte. Gyakugatte, irrespective of chaki, is always sou.
On positioning:
- Chakin is tenari on kama lid, not straight.
- Kama lid is parallel to your body.
When taking hishaku at the beginning of the temae, to place on futaoki:

General notes, not necessarily Suzuki-sensei specific but still coming from my notes with him:
- Fukusa sabaki is over R knee
- Leaving with kensui, hold like hongatte (in L), but hide kensui against R wall. Slowly straighten your arm as you turn to keep hensui hidden as you stand.
- Haiken dougu is kamiza-order, not R → L order.
- Fukusa from waist, flip up like how women do in hongatte, then give to L.
- Sumi, when placed into the rochuu, is the same as hongatte. The sumitori is backwards, but the kuda / wari are still L / R respectively.
- Always pick up hishaku with R from kama.
- Always handle futaoki with R (except for very end when holding hishaku for exiting).
- Nakajimai (?), 3h futaoki.
- Always alternate L and R emptying kensui.
- If you have one guest, you do chasentoshi oyu (L), bowl return oyu (R), shimai mizu (L).
- Two guests, you continue alternating L R L R etc.
- Sotozumi
Cliff Notes
- Fukusa is on R obi. Always take women’s style, ie flipping up and taking instead of pulling. Place upside down when giving to L, and take the top fold.
- Always cross tatami heri with the foot closest to the guest (left foot on entering, right foot on leaving).
- Kensui always stays in the kattetsuki hand (R for entering, L for leaving).
- Use kattetsuki hand (ie R) for karioki when doing okiawase.
- Hishaku handling is the same as chashaku, ie walk up → walk down.
- Placing down: L thumb on fushi, R slightly below, rehold into L, place down.
- Picking up: Opposite of above.
- When using fukusa for the lid, karioki position is above R knee.
- Chawan / chaire handling:
- Furo: L → R for chawan, R for chaire
- Ro: 3H for chawan (?), R for chaire
- Fukusa handling, chakin both over R knee.
- Chaire goes on a diagonal to the mizusashi (tenari), and chasen goes mizusashi shomen (facing the same direction as the mizusashi, not tenari).
- Emptying chawan into the kensui, alternate between L pours (2h) and R pours (3h). L first.
- Chaki lid goes to 6:00 (koicha and usucha both).
- Bowl goes out with L.
- Q: How does kobukusa go out? Flip around, then rehold and place with L?
- Haiken dougu stays kamiza ordered always (not R → L).
- Leaving with kensui, hold in L, but stand and turn to hide the kensui.
- Tana kazari is also mirrored.
- Hishaku is placed on tana with L, not R.
- Other dougu (natsume, futaoki) are kamiza arranged, not R → L arranged.
Koicha
- Do not flip the shifuku. Place down with R.
Usucha
- During hakobi, enter with bowl in L, natsume in R. Walk directly to mizusashi shomen, and place natsume to L position, then take chawan in R and place to R position.
Furo
Ro
- Chakin is tenari on the lid
- Kama lid (when cracked open) should be parallel to your body
- Sotozumi
- Kao on kama should be the same as if it was in furo and slid into the ro (ie facing kamiza). Suzuki sensei opinion.
- Fukusa karioki position after closing lid during kiyome is still by right knee, not mirrored (source: white book)
