Furo

Futaoki may be bisected by the edge of the shikiita, or tangent to the shikiita in the front. It depends on the size of your lid and the size of your tatami, but either way is acceptable. (ref glenn)

When placing the chawan out for kyaku, it should be centered in a 7 sun x 7 sun space, which is one half the width of the ro. (ref glenn)

  • Furosaki byobu should be placed ON THE HERI INTERIOR TO THE TEMAEDATAMI. Never NEVER outside of it. What if you have fusuma directly behind the temaedatami — if you open the fusuma, you could nail the furosaki byobu and really fuck things up
  • For Daime, the shikiita is placed 4 sun from the heri. For Koma (Chabako/binkake/etc), the binkake is placed 6 sun from the heri. For regular positioning, front of the shikiita should be 8 sun from the heri (that is, 16 lines from the adjacent heri). However, the heri is actually 2 mei wide, so in total, the shikiita is 9 sun away from your legs.
  • Furo should be placed such that there are 7 or 9 lines between the shikiita and the heri on the left. You can go shorter or bigger, but it should always be odd numbers (ie 5, 11, 13, all okay).
    • If your shikiita isn’t an integer-mei width, there is debate over which should be lined up. Should you line it up so it’s exactly 7 on the left, but kyaku-side is a half-mei? Or should it be the other way around? Personally, I think you should line it up so it looks better from the kyaku side, but that’s just my policy.
  • Mizusashi should be in the center of the right half of the temaeza, NOT in the center of the space created by furo shikiita and the remainder of the tatami. Center of the mizusashi should naturally line up with the center of the kama.
    • If you’re using a particularly large tana or a particularly large shikiita, you should line up whichever is bigger to 16 lines. Then adjust the other one so it’s in the center of the larger one. The fronts of the shikiita/tana won’t line up.
  • Nagashidate furo, the shikiita should be placed so it’s 3 lines biased left from center. Practically, this means the shikiita is around 17 to 19 mei from the left.
