Cliff Notes
History
Dougu
- Gyo daisu
- Hakkei bon
- Wa mono chaire (meibutsu?)
- Zoge chashaku
- Seto mizusashi tomobuta (not nuributa)
- He thinks this is not a hitoeguchi. This would be a “regular” seto with an inset lid, and a more spherical tsumami than on nuributa.
- Magemono mizutsugi (like all juuden)
- All other dogu like Gyo no Gyo
Special Characteristics
(raw notes)
- Hold hishaku and kama no futa at the same time (not Shin ni sou ari, this is just straight up sou like Daisu Usucha)
- Chakin goes onto the kama no futa after initial wipe
- Bon gets pulled forward on the ten-ita during nakadachi, then during temae, it stays there the entire time
- Chaire → chashaku wiping happens back to back. After wiping chaire, you immediately refold into sou sabaki, then take chashaku from its position on the bon.
- Chaire lid goes onto the bon, leaning on the inner edge, at 6’ on fire when making tea
- Chashaku goes onto the hane after scooping, tap inside at 7’
- Mizusashi lid goes to gyo 430 position, but opening 1h like shin.
- Haiken dougu goes all kantsuki, but no overlapping
- Haiken guest portion is just like gyo no gyo, returns back to kamiza position
- Oki-kiri
- Chawan dai is primarily L → R, chaire is R → L (like “normal”)
Temae (Furo)
Setup
- Exactly the same original setup as Gyo no Gyo.
Nakadachi
- Bring in chawan with chasen, chakin, and chashaku (on bowl rim, not on hane).
- Set the hakke-bon
- Move chaire to thunder
- Place chashaku to wind
- Place everything else to lake (nothing goes on fire)
- Pull hakke-bon forward, giri-giri to front.
- Move mizusashi
- Crab walk scoot to mizusashi, push back (like Gyo no Gyo).
- Scoot back to imai, then scoot back and back out like Gyo no Gyo.
Entrance
- Enter as in Gyo no Gyo.
- Opening door is in shin hands for everything above Shikaden.
- Enter with nothing, close door, walk up, sit low, scoot scoot.
- Hibashi out (both together).
- Chaire down to mizusashi shomen (on floor).
- 2h kensui out to knee line, then futaoki to position on jiita and sorei like Gyo no Gyo.
- Note: This feels a lot like ue shita ue ue shita.
Ue (pull bon forward)→ already happened at shoiri- Shita (hibashi)
- Ue (chaire)
Ue (chawan)→ skip, it stays up- Shita (kensui)
Kiyome
- Kiyome chaire.
- Chaire to temae 2h (all handling in this temae is 2h, momite if applicable).
- Open shifuku as wamono. Flip hi no hou, place to ten-ita L corner with L.
- Fukusa shin sabaki, then wipe as wamono. Mukou → temae, then push with thumb.
- (Fukusa stays closed, not open like Shin no Gyo or with meibutsu).
- Open zabuton like usual, spider hands, then place down primarily with R back to floor in front of mizusashi shomen.
- Kiyome chashaku.
- WHILE YOUR FUKUSA IS STILL OUT, take 3rd from bottom and go immediately into sou sabaki (no yoho).
- After fold, take chashaku from bon (pinching top-bottom) and immediately wipe.
- Wipe 3x, then push pull pull and refold from underneath, then wipe 1x more.
- Return chashaku to its place on tenita bon.
- Fukusa down to R knee karioki.
- Chawan down.
- Bring chawan down to imai.
- Chasen comes out → kensui no migikata.
- Without wiping (because it’s tomobuta), chakin goes directly onto mizusashi lid.
- Open kama etc.
- Open hoyasan, avoiding bowl around L side like usual.
- Open lid with fukusa (no kobiki), placing fukusa still backwards below kensui.
- Take hishaku like usual for non-shin, from 3’.
- Remember, no Kagamibishaku in okuden.
- Warm the bowl (oki-kiri).
- Oyu → kosusugi → empty → catch drip with ring finger.
- Oyu again → chasen into bowl → bowl onto space on ji-ita.
- While bowl is warming, kiyome dai.
- Take fukusa from underneath kensui, then gyo-sabaki (taking current bottom fold).
- Wipe dai like usual for Daitenmoku, just fukusa in gyo.
- Place down → pom open → refold into right-side-up sou sabaki and place beneath kensui.
- Take chawan in hand, chasentoshi etc like Gyo no Gyo.
- Chasentoshi 3x. Chasen back to kensui no migi-kata.
- Dump, catch drip with chakin, wipe.
- Place bowl back down. Tatami-kae, then chakin onto kama no futa.
Making tea
- Momite, then take chaire and scoop.
- Take R with L atsukai, then transfer to L (holding from side, not on palm).
- Lid goes to 6’ on the hakke-bon, leaning against the lip as the natsume does in Bonryaku.
- Sukuidashi, then place chashaku onto hane.
- Close lid, return chaire to mizusashi shomen.
- Sabaku, then tap 7’.
- Wipe chashaku before placing back onto the bon.
- Chashaku nigiriconde, then take fukusa with R.
- Like Gyo no Gyo, fold sou sabaki (no yoho) but taking the bottom side.
- Push pull pull, then refold from bottom again (now right-side up) and do one last wipe.
- Chashaku to bon, then fukusa as-is beneath kensui, without pom-pom.
- Open mizusashi.
- It’s tomobuta, and it’s supposed to have a bigger tsumami.
- Open 1h like shin, but place it down to the 430 gyo position.
- Take cold water → escalator → make tea.
- Just like Gyo no Gyo. Nothing fancy here. No suishaku etc.
- When done, chasen goes to kensui no migi-kata.
- Turn with chawan to kyakutsuki, place out kantsuki, shittai 3x and hikae.
- Guest drinks, talk etc like normal
- After suikiri, turn back to imai. Add cold water, then koshi fukusa.
Shimai
- Guest brings bowl back kantsuki.
- Retrieve bowl (turn → take → turn back), place temae, and sorei.
- Also ask questions at sorei like usual for Gyo no Gyo.
- Clean bowl like usual for Gyo no Gyo.
- Add oyu → kosusugi → empty → catch drip → back to dai.
- Ichiyo oshimai itashimasu
- Add mizu → chasentoshi on dai → empty → wipe with chakin → bowl down → tatami-kae.
- Chasen back into bowl.
- Chashaku onto bowl rim.
- Bowl to himado-mae.
- Add mizu and close water.
- Toribishaku → add mizu in escalator → yugaeshi.
- WHILE HOLDING HISHAKU, close kama lid.
- Hishaku back to shakutate.
- Close hoyasan.
- Close mizusashi lid 1h, like shin.
Haiken
- Kyaku: Douzo o chaire, o chashaku, o shifuku no haiken wo.
- Move futaoki back to its original spot 3h.
- Momite, then take chaire to kyakutsuki.
- Kiyome chaire.
- Gyo sabaki, then wipe in wamono sequencing (nibiki, then push thumb for doubuki).
- Spider hands, then turn MIGI MAWARI and place out.
- This feels super weird for so many reasons. It’s very tall, it’s turning the wrong way, etc.
- Place out chashaku and shifuku.
- Thankfully easy. Take → turn → place out with te wo suite.
- NO OVERLAPPING. Different from Gyo no Gyo.
- Turn back to imai. Chawan combo onto center of hakke-bon.
- Hibashi back to shakutate.
- Shikko, exit with kensui.
- Note: Bon stays pulled forward on the ten-ita the entire time!
- Note: All of this is backing out like in Gyo no Gyo
- Come back in, take chawan on bon.
- No first pull, it’s already forward.
- Then magemono mizutsugi.
- Pull mizusashi forward back to original place.
- Still open mizusashi lid the same way, 1h like shin but into gyo 4:30 position.
- Then kensui, standing and turning at imai after doing this.
Exit
- Come back in with Rikyugata Chuu Natsume like in Gyo no Gyo.
- Answer questions
- Exit exactly like in Gyo no Gyo.
- Momite
- Take shifuku on L palm
- Take chaire, place onto shifuku with L thumb on shoulder
- Take chashaku with R, nigiriconde, then hold chaire with R
- Drop L thumb to middle of chaire
- Place down at door exactly like Gyo no Gyo. Sorei, close door.
Temae (Ro)
Kyaku Notes
Drinking
- Nothing special. Exactly the same as Gyo no Gyo or Daitenmoku.
