Special Ro Characteristics

  • Has midare (unlike furo!)
  • Tome-oki
  • Pull shakutate forward before using
  • No mizu replenished into kama whatsoever

Temae

The differences between furo and ro in this temae are almost identical to the differences between Shin no Gyo furo and ro, which is to say that shin temae are consistent when switching between seasons.

Setup

  • TODO: Include suzuki dougu placement here
  • Jiita
    • Shakutate and kensui on the left
    • Mizusashi on the right
  • Tenita

Nakadachi

  • Bring chawan (in shifuku, on dai) with chashaku on right side of hane, totally vertical.
  • Move items onto the ten-ita.
    • Sit at daisu shomen, placing chawan etc to temae.
    • Take kobukusa from kaichu. Place chashaku on the folded kobukusa, then place the combo to the right of the bon with R.
      • (Spacing here is in thirds, with all items laterally aligned).
    • Place chawan + dai to the left of bon.
  • Rearrange the jiita from midare.
    • Move mizusashi laterally to center.
    • Move shakutate laterally to the right. Kensui → mizusashi → shakutate should make a diagonal line.
      • Moving shakutate, place hands down as if moving hibashi (because the shakutate contains hibashi).
  • Exit to mizuya.
    • Shittai back 3x.
    • Stand with L. Move L to line, then cross line with R.

Opening

Note: See Senzara for tips on folding chakin to keep chasen up.

  • Enter with senzara, sitting low.
    • Place senzara to the upper geza corner.
    • Open door in shin, then sorei from the door.
    • Enter, holding senzara on L palm with R gently pinching the edge of the plate.
    • Place senzara to the upper geza corner (again), then close door in shin.
    • Sit low at daisu → place senzara to himado-mae → shikko up.
  • Remove hibashi betsu-betsu, R then L.
    • (Just come out the front center of the jiita. Don’t go all the way around the kensui.)
  • Move senzara down to knee line.
    • Temae positioning will be as follows:
      • Kensui at “normal” ro position (hangata, 5 mei from wall)
      • Senzara slightly left and beyond the kensui. Upper tangent to knee line, close to katte wall.
      • Chasen in a vertical line, directly above senzara
      • Chawan + dai at himado-mae
  • Take down bon, open chaire shifuku.
    • Pull-pull the bon and bring to center.
    • Open the chaire as usual for karamono. Keep chaire in the center the whole time.
    • Flip shifuku, place left front of ten-ita with L (same as Gyo no Gyo etc).
  • Place chashaku on bon.
    • Take down both chashaku + kobukusa.
    • Holding kobukusa in L, place chashaku down to 4:30.
      • For an Ennosai bon (big), chashaku has room to point directly center.
      • For a Tantansai bon (small), there is no room, so it should point toward the back (ie where the chaire will go later in temae).
  • Purify chaire.
    • Sanpo sabaki
    • Then purify as in shin style. ie:
      • Temae → mukou clean the lid
      • Open the kobukusa one fold as in Shin no Gyo, then doubuki 3x (pulling with thumb, as usual for karamono).
    • Bring the kobukusa under like zabuton and itsy-bitsy-spider swap hands.
    • Holding the chaire predominantly in R, slide the kobukusa to support the left of the chaire, then place on the ten-ita.
      • Centered horizontally, and vertically spaced to line up with where the chashaku will go.
  • Purify chashaku.
    • Open kobukusa to usual half fold, then re-sanpo sabaki, stopping one fold before a full shin sabaki.
    • Purify chashaku 3x, then push-pull-pull. No fourth wipe!
    • Rehold chashaku 3h (pinching top/bottom), then place onto ten-ita to the right of the chaire, overhanging slightly.
      • Spacing to chaire is ~one chuu natsume apart.
    • Open kobukusa to usual half fold, then place to the right of the chashaku, giri-giri to the front of the ten-ita.
  • Purify (kutsurii) bon.
    • Take fukusa from obi, then yoho sou-sabaki.
    • Wipe Kutsurii.
    • Koshi fukusa.
  • Return chaire and chashaku to bon.
    • Momite, then put chaire to rear center.
    • 3h rehold chashaku, pinching sides, and place at 4:30.
      • Irrespective of which bon is used, there will be plenty of space now to fit the chashaku to point to the center.
      • For Tantansai bon, just make sure to place the chawan as low as possible. Potentially overhanging slightly beyond the rim of the bon.
  • Bring chawan (in shifuku) onto bon, open shifuku.
    • Open as usual for Shin Musubi, ie in Shin no Gyo, returning bowl to the tray once open.
    • Tie the shifuku in Katatombo (the reversible one).
    • Fold right over left, so the opening is on the left. Give to R, then place on the right front of the tenita (next to the kobukusa).
  • Turn with tray to imai.
  • Take kensui and futaoki from daisu.
    • Turn back to daisu shomen.
    • Remove kensui from jiita with 2h, placing down with L to the “usual” hakobi ro position (hangata, 5 mei from the wall).
    • Take futaoki with R, place on L palm, then turn back to imai.
    • Place futaoki in the usual position for ro hirademae.
  • Add hot water and kosusugi.
    • Remember, “shin ni sou ari” is only when closing. Opening is always betsu-betsu in shin.
    • Taking fukusa from obi, fold into sou-sabaki.
    • Kobiki the kama lid and open. Fukusa to R knee karioki.
      • From suzuki: fukusa karioki position cannot be higher than the halfway point of the ro. So it will end up below your right knee (despite our usual mnemonic that karioki is beyond and right of the right knee).
    • Take the hishaku.
      • From imai, put 2h down, then bring forward the shakutate with R.
        • It will be in this position for the rest of temae.
        • Positioning-wise, the hishaku shouldn’t cross the plane of the tenita.
      • Pull-pull the hishaku, then kagamibishaku.
    • Add a half-scoop of hot water to the bowl. Place hishaku into kama tome-oki.
    • Kosusugi, empty holding 2h primarily with L, catch the drip with ring finger.
  • Add more hot water. Close kama and return hishaku to shakutate (shin ni sou ari).
    • Tori-oki, take hishaku as if taking cold water (always true for this temae). Half scoop of hot water into bowl.
    • While still holding hishaku, close kama lid with fukusa. Return hishaku to shakutate push-push.
    • Add chasen to oyu, let it soak while purifying dai.
  • Purify dai
    • Sanpo sabaki, then wipe dai like usual from Daitenmoku.
    • Return kobukusa to ten-ita.
  • Chasentoshi and wipe bowl.
    • From the bon, do chasentoshi as usual for Daitenmoku.
    • Place chasen directly above the senzara, then while your hand is there, take the chakin.
    • Pinching chakin against the side of the bowl as in Shin no Gyo, empty into kensui.
      • I always have issues feeling cramped against the chashaku in this position. The best way to solve that is to hold the chakin more deeply, crushing the fukudame. It helps avoid the chashaku.
    • Wipe bowl, then tatami-kae and return chakin to senzara.
      • suzuki The Shin Chakin should only be folded in thirds when on the senzara. So when wiping the chawan, ignore the creases and fold in half / quarters just like you do in hirademae.
      • Then, when doing tatami-kae, go back to thirds.

Making tea

  • Scoop tea
    • Momite, then take karamono. Lid goes where the chaire was sitting.
    • Scoop tea, then leave chashaku in the bowl otoshi-komi. Close chaire.
    • Zig-zag, then 2x tap on finger.
  • Clean chashaku
    • While still holding chashaku nigiriconde, take kobukusa with R, then sanpo sabaki.
      • No need to keep the chashaku behind the kobukusa or anything. It’s too small.
    • Wipe 3x, then push-pull-pull.
    • 3h rehold chashaku, then place down pinching from sides.
      • [?] TODO Do you pinch from sides or pinch from top when putting on daienbon? It’s certainly big enough to do either ➕ 2025-02-09
    • Pom-pom kobukusa, then open and return to ten-ita.
  • Add hot water.
    • Kobiki and open lid. Fukusa goes left when done, not back to karioki.
    • Take hishaku pull-pull, then suishaku (2x back to back water scoops).
    • Knead.
  • Chawan onto dai → turn to kyakutsuki → hidari-mawari in the air → chawan to kantsuki.
    • POINTO: This is different from Daien no Sou, where you turn with the dai first, then place the chawan on the dai at kyakutsuki.
  • Shittai 2x, then hikae.

Kyaku takes a sip → Ofukukagen wa?

  • Close shop
    • Scoot back forward, then turn to imai.
    • Shin ni sou ari, close kama lid and return hishaku.
    • Take futaoki, turn to daisu shomen, then return to its original position on the jiita.
  • Turn back to kyakutsuki, no longer in hikae. Talk talk.

Kyaku ask questions → suikiri.

  • Open shop
    • Turn to daisu shomen, bringing futaoki back to imai.
    • Kobiki and open kama lid.
    • Hishaku back into kama.
      • (Don’t open the mizusashi yet! This happens “just in time”, when you need it later.)

Shimai

  • Bring chawan back to imai from kyakutsuki, sorei.
    • Answer questions about the bowl and dai here.
  • Oyu → kosusugi → ichiyo oshimai itashimasu.
    • [?] TODO Need to check, but is this emptying with R, or emptying with L? ➕ 2025-02-09
  • Add cold water, chasentoshi, and wipe bowl.
    • After ichiyo oshimai, immediately open the mizusashi lid (1h in shin style).
    • Add half scoop of cold water. Do chasentoshi as usual for daitenmoku.
    • Like at the opening, return the chasen to its spot above the senzara, then take the chakin while there. Pinch the side of the bowl with the chakin → empty → wipe → tatami-kae.
    • Return the chakin to the senzara, then while you’re there, also return the chasen.
  • Turn back to daisu shomen and put chawan back into shifuku.
    • Turn back with bon, then yubi-kiri 3x.
    • Open shifuku in L hand, tying cord around L pinky, then place bowl back into shifuku.
      • To open the shifuku nicely, put R hand inside, then once hidden inside, open your fingers out and expand. Close fingers before retracting R hand.
      • After placing bowl in the chawan, be sure to pull up the sides of the shifuku L → R before placing down.
    • Place back onto bon, then tie as in nagao / chabako.
    • Return chawan back to dai.
  • Move chaire and chashaku to center of bon.
    • Momite, then move chaire to dead-on center of bon.
      • On the smaller bon, I have troubles with this due to the position of the chashaku. It ends up going more to the left than bang-on center.
    • Then 3h move chashaku to R of chaire.
  • Return bon to ten-ita, push-push.
  • Turn back to imai, and close shin ni sou ari.

Haiken

  • [?] TODO Do you ask just bonchuu, or bonchuu and shifuku? ➕ 2025-02-09

Douzo o-bon-chuu, o-shifuku no haiken wo.

  • Return futaoki to its original position on the jiita.
  • Bring the bon down to the floor (pull-pull), then immediately put the chashaku back up to the ten-ita 3h.
  • Purify chaire.
    • Sanpo sabaki, then purify as in the beginning of temae.
    • Once done, place chaire and kobukusa back onto ten-ita as before.
  • Purify bon Kutsurii.
  • Chaire, chashaku, shifuku to bon.
    • Momite to take chaire, place in center of bon.
    • 3h place chashaku to R of chaire.
      • (I find that pinching sides doesn’t really work here. I end up pinching top/bottom.)
    • Take shifuku with L, give to R, then place to the left of the chaire.
  • Place bon out for haiken.
    • Turn all the way out beyond the ro.
    • Turn migi-mawari on the ground, then place out kantsuki.
  • Chawan + dai to tenita, kobukusa to kaichuu.
    • Turn back to daisu shomen.
    • Place the chawan + dai onto the center of the ten-ita.
    • While you’re there, take the kobukusa and put it back in your kaichu.
  • Senzara to himado-mae.
  • Hibashi back to shakutate, betsu-betsu.

Then exit

  • First, take out senzara and kensui
    • Place senzara on R palm, then scoot back 3x with L hand on R knee.
    • Take kensui, stand, and leave for the door.
    • Sitting back at the door, place kensui in front of L knee and senzara in front of R knee.
    • Open the door in shin, then exit.
  • Then, take out chawan + dai.
  • Then, bring mizutsugi.
    • (Mizusashi is in the center of the jiita, so different things happen).
    • Sit low, placing mizutsugi in center of daisu shomen.
    • Scoot up, then move mizutsugi to the left.
    • 1h open mizusashi lid as in shin.
    • Replenish water, close lid 1h, return mizutsugi, scoot back, exit.
  • Then, bring kensui and fix midare.
    • Reverse order as in the beginning. Kensui down 2h, then futaoki back into kensui. Kensui back to position.
    • Then, 2h down and move shakutate back (and 2h again at end).
    • Lastly, mizusashi back to its home.
    • Now, we’re back in our original position, so we can stand directly from this position and turn without scooting.

Then questions

  • Bring shinnuri nakatsugi with hitoguchi of tea on hoshogami, and place on tenita.
  • Turn out to bon shomen to answer questions.
  • Pull-pull bon, take and exit.
