Daien no shin

  • chashaku should always try to point to the center, irrespective of bon size. For smaller bon, it doesn’t fit when pointing to center at beginning when Claire is there, so it needs to point to the rear (eg where the chairs will go later in temae). But once the chairs is moved, the center opens up. This includes when the chawan is there — chawan should leave plenty of room. L
    • this position should be same for Bonryaku too, chashaku pointing to center
    • with chashaku in this position, the chakin when pinching side of bowl is tight against chashaku. If you hold chakin more deeply, and crush the fukudame, it won’t touch the chashaku.
  • we think water is a just in time thing for ro. Only open it once you need it, don’t open it preemptively when opening up shop after bowl conversation
  • chakin should stay in 3rds when on senzara. When interacting with bowl, it’s 4ths like usual for hakobi. So when putting in bowl: fold over the rim by half, I-ri on inside “like usual” for hakobi with the half folds. When doing tatami-kae to put back onto senzara, fold into thirds
  • to keep the chasen from falling on senzara, open rear of chakin a little more to give a better platform (not full chaise lounge, but a little bit)
  • he thinks use R hand when emptying used water into kensui, despite being on the floor
  • mage mono katakuchi, base of the spout is attached higher on the body. Also, the lid has a deeper lip. For the latter reason primarily, no using L thumb to hold lid down
    • Suzuki-sensei also mentioned at one point that you don’t use L thumb bc wood doesn’t rattle, but ceramics do
  • yes, still say ichiyo oshimai bc you are going to have more tea, even if in another room
  • at end of shimai, chaire does go center and chashaku goes right. But because of chashaku pointing to center, there may not be room. I had to put chaire more on the left to account for this

Daitenmoku

  • he likes to do te wo suite all the time bc it fits shikaden. You still yoho sabaki at the end, etc, so you should also te wo suite
