This mostly applies to Chakai Host Manner, but it’s also applicable during okeiko.
Options
There are two ways to do this. For both ways, you serve separate containers for omogashi and higashi.
NOTE
Glenn really dislikes kashibachi for okeiko. (They only make sense in chakai context). So, for okeiko when in this situation, he serves omogashi on meimeizara.
On the kyaku side, both ways have you pass the kashiki down like a conveyor belt.
- First take your omogashi.
- Then pass the kashiki down and bring the higashiki front.
The common way (ostensibly)
One way to do this is to serve the omogashi directly in front of the guest, then serve the higashiki beyond and kamiza from the omogashi-ki.
Glenn's opinion
- Sitting in front of the guest, then placing something very far away from them, is weird.
- Placing the higashiki kamiza relative to the omogashi-ki makes the higashi seem more important, which is also weird.
- As kyaku, reaching for the higashiki is difficult.
Shiotsuki-sensei’s way
He learned this way from Shiotsuki-sensei, Daisosho’s sister. Instead of placing the higashiki beyond and offset kamiza, she places the higashiki beyond and centered.
Glenn's opinion
- As host, you can place the higashiki directly in front of you instead of putting it far away.
- It does not put the higashiki above the omogashi-ki, ranking-wise.
- As kyaku, it’s easier to take.
