Leaving your fukusa after temae is an indicator that you will not replenish the mizusashi, not that you are skipping haiken. It’s common to get this confused with Irekodate and Sou Kazari.

Where to leave your fukusa

You don’t always have a nuributa. In order of preference:

  1. On nuri-buta
  2. If no nuri-buta, on the lacquer ten-ita. (Glenn: And I’ve also seen it on the ji-ita in front of the mizusashi with a tomobuta when using a kokodana)
  3. Else, new as of the white books, on the kiji ten-ita.
  4. Or, tied like semi onto one of the posts (Glenn: Although not encouraged since Hounsai)
