How to handle

Kobukusa is always placed out geza. It’s not a left-right thing. It’s a pure secondary attachment to the chawan.

  • Teishu places the chawan directly to its usual spot, then the kobukusa goes to the side.
  • When guests move the bowl, they move the bowl centered on their body, then the kobukusa geza and off-center. (Bowl takes priority).

When returning the bowl to the host, the host takes the kobukusa first and returns to kaichu. Then they bring in the bowl.

Guest manner with kobukusa

Assuming Hongatte for this description.

Drinking

  • Shokyaku brings to their space.
    • Kobukusa goes to their right, heriuchi.
    • Chawan goes between them and the next guest, heriuchi.
  • Sorei as usual.
  • Bring bowl heriuchi center. Kobukusa wo haishaku itashimasu.
  • Leaving bowl on ground, take kobukusa and open on L palm. Then, place bowl on and drink.

Intermediate guests do not separate bowl from kobukusa. They travel together. Bowl is turned on the palm.

Last guest separates.

  • After last sip, last guest places bowl down heriuchi center without kobukusa.
  • R closes kobukusa (currently on L palm), then R places to left heriuchi.

Haiken

Bowl is brought up to shokyaku with bowl centered, kobukusa off-center.

Both the chawan and the kobukusa are viewed.
