- On positioning
- If you’re using marudatami (ie no fumikomidatami, you’re walking straight onto the tatami, ie koma-zue), back of the shikiita is 6 sun from the end of the tatami.
- And related, shikiita is 4 sun from the back in daime.
- If you’re using yojohan, ie not komazue, the regular 16 mei is good. But the hanagata bon, for example, is gargantuan. So it should be a little farther (18-20).
Knee line dougu positioning
In general, dougu goes below your knee line. If you’re doing temae on a diagonal, the knee line position is measured from your right knee (ie the lower of the two). glenn
Link to original- From your knee line position, chawan should be placed in the center of one quarter of the ro, ie center of 7 sun from the corner (pretending as if the heri isn’t there).
- If you’re using marudatami (ie no fumikomidatami, you’re walking straight onto the tatami, ie koma-zue), back of the shikiita is 6 sun from the end of the tatami.
- On tatami mat placement etc
- Doing a sanjo ie all three in a line together (versus a T) is more usual. Do this so you can get used to your spacing!
- Doing chabako in general on tatami is kinda weird. Nice ways to use the space typically involve using a smaller part of the space, then letting yourself have a wide feeling around it.
- ie, use the center two kayoi-datami of a hachijo. Lay some mosen down, and do chabako there, preferably with the doors open if possible.
- On shifuku
- Chawan shifuku, just look at the video. Key points on katatombo:
- Pull the cord with your right hand, not your left.
- At the end, rotate your hand outward to “lock” it.
- When pulling, pull out away from you, not up.
- Chashaku shifuku
- His opinion, use R to do the whole thing. So L holds, then R flips the top down. Then R flips the bottom up, and both hands tie.
- Chawan shifuku, just look at the video. Key points on katatombo:
- Other things
- Bringing furidashi in for haiken (ie big movement), atsukai instead of straight over. Looks nicer.
- The pewter kensui I have from Gary sensei, it was actually from Glenn! It was not a crab shell thingy as he mentioned, but actually marketed as a vase. Gary “improved” the story lol. Material is polished pewter.
- An idea, try to get everyone from our Midorikai class to do a chabako secret santa kind of thing, get some chabako things for people to build their set
- Also a reminder to me, buy a different chabako (box) at some point so the lid doesn’t get scratched to hell when you’re putting the chawan on it, for okeiko purposes
- Holding the tetsubin, he prefers to keep tea hand, as opposed to thumb on the handle. Then to pour, it will feel like it’s just dangling from your fingers, but you’ll gain stability when you use your fukusa.
