On balance:
- Balance was all wrong. I think the reason was that I needed to make bigger lobes.
- Potential fix: between steps 3 and 4 below, it starts off with small lobes but they make the lobes look a lot bigger when they pinch.
- Alternately, just make bigger lobes outright.
- The center isn’t in the center. If you look at the bottom step, the center is actually pointing more toward the lower right. So when making the lobes, aim toward that offset center instead of the true center.
We need to get a needle tool. Using a real needle was too fine and left too narrow an incision. Using the back side of a paring knife, and holding it like a pencil, worked well.
Konashi started to dry as we worked with it, then by the time we got to making the veins, the konashi tore instead of cleanly indenting. Putting it back under a damp paper towel for a bit helped.
Tip! Drawing the veins starting from the “stem” and going out helped a lot to get the right balance on the veins.
Overall: I think I just need more practice. Just make a lot of konashi, just one boring color, and make a whole ton of them.
Day after:
- It’s not the size of the lobes necessarily. It’s that they sloped downward. In the video, the face of the lobes are the outermost part of the leaf. The rest of the lobe doesn’t continue to grow after the face. For example:
- Leaf body keeps growing after the face (see upper left)

- Leaf body still grows a bit after the face, but it’s much better.
