This is the position take as teishu when doing haiken during ro.

Note that you do not do this when serving tea etc. This is exclusively a haiken concept. For other times, eg serving tea, you always sit bisected by the robuchi.

Positioning

Shikaden

Applicable for all Shikaden other than Satsubako (iirc?): haiken kiyome is done with your body 3 mei off-center from the edge of the robuchi.

Okuden

Applicable for all Okuden: haiken kiyome is done with your body completely outside the ro (technically 7 mei off-center).

Movement

This is much worse in okuden, but ultimately the same.

Don’t just pivot your body. In okuden especially, you are so far away that you will get lost in no man’s land if you just try to pivot and slowly make your way back to daisu shomen. Instead, pretend you are a robot with non-holonomic drive constraints, ie you need to turn → move → turn.

This only really matters when going to-and-from daisu shomen. Imai isn’t far away enough for this to matter as much.

Going from outside the ro to daisu shomen:

  • Start turning more-or-less in place.
  • After you’ve turned, finish by scooting 2x forward.

Going from daisu shomen to outside the ro:

  • Scoot backwards 2x.
  • Then start turning while finishing backing up.

History

glenn originally, there used to be three positions relative to the edge of the robuchi:

  • 3 mei for Shikaden
  • 5 mei for Gyo Daisu and Sou Daisu
  • 7 mei for Shin
