General

  • Ask Suzuki-sensei: How much should you fill a chaire for sukuidashi?
    • He said that he’s heard lots of people fill the chaire completely then just scoop what you need. But, he doesn’t like that if you fill it completely, it becomes hard to view during haiken.
    • Ask Suzuki-sensei when we see him next!
  • His opinion on shifuku x chashaku positioning:
    • Chashaku and shifuku should be visually centered
    • Some people say that the center of the chashaku should line up with the side stitch of the shifuku, but that dramatically changes depending on the shifuku!

Gyo no Gyo

  • TODO AMEND MY NOTES. Just pull once back and forth on the daisu. Doing two pulls just to reposition the bon to the front of the ten-ita is too fussy. The only time you should do two pulls is when you’re actually taking it off the daisu, ie pull once to front → rehold from sides and take. ✅ 2025-11-02
  • This isn’t anything new, but just reiterating here:
    • You must use the fukusa in gyo no gyo and up whenever you open the kama lid.
    • The only time you use the fukusa to close the lid is when you’re closing it flat in ro, because it’s still hot. Other times, ie when you close the lid while the guest is drinking, you just use your hand.
  • Kyaku, returning chaire to host after haiken:
    • This wasn’t a mandate, but his preference is to turn chaire on kobukusa before returning to kantsuki.
    • The other option, if you’re going to do it in the hand, is to do it low.
  • Chasen is indeed to the RIGHT when clean like in shikaden, not kensui-no-kata when clean like in shin no gyo.
  • For karamono-no-ichi as well as shin/gyo position during haiken:
    • Moving all the way out there is very far!
    • Think of it like a three point turn.
      • From daisu shomen, start with two scoots straight back.
      • Then, like in a three point turn, continue backing up but turning all the while.
    • And the same in reverse. Start the turn first, then finalize the movement with a forward scoot up to the daisu.
    • Note: For going to-and-from imai, you don’t really need to do this. You can just side-scoot, it’s close enough.

Bondate

  • Haiken ask is douzo o karamono, o bon, o chashaku, o chifuku no haiken wo.
  • Bon turn is always migi-mawari (see previous day’s notes from bondate)
