Daien no Shin
Dougu (mostly same as shin no gyo):
- Shin daisu placed 18+ mei from the heri.
- Karakane kaigu
- Karakane shakutate
- Karakane efugo kensui
- Karakane mizusashi
- Fukinuki futaoki
- Rotationally-symmetric hibashi
- Sashitoshi hishaku
- Mayuburo with shinnari-gama.
- Q: Urokobai?
- Oo-meibutsu karamono chaire
- Q: Oo-meibutsu tenmokujawan?
- Shin-nuri dai
- Not soeta-mono. For juuden, “these are just pillows”
- Zouge chashaku
- Dai-en bon (tantansai konomi, small, or ennosai konomi, gargantuan)
- Shouha donsu kobukusa
- Sen-zara with shin chasen, shin chakin [folded in thirds]
General atsukai etc notes (mostly the same as shin no gyo)
- Hishaku is tori-oki
- Hishaku is pull-pull out of the shakutate
- Hibashi are taken betsu-betsu from the shakutate. Taking out is R→L, putting back is L→R
- Taking the daien bon is the same as in gyo-no-gyo, ie pull-pull on the tenita etc.
- No mizu whatsoever after making tea. No replenish while guests are looking at the chawan, no replenish at the end (usucha is done in another room)
- Bring shinnuri nakatsugi with hitoguchi tea on folded hoshigami, wa on bottom with right side folded slightly lower, at the end of temae before haiken
Sanpo sabaki
- Kobukusa is used to kiyome the chaire, chashaku, and tenmoku dai. (Fukusa in sou-sabaki with sou-yoho-sabaki is used for the bon with ku-tsu-ri-i)
- General method
- Open the kobukusa as usual (wa on the right) and hold both upper corners. Over L knee as usual, close and open the corners.
- Take the next corner CCW and rotate, just like yoho-sabaki.
- Do the san-po sabaki part every time. Never skip and go straight to the fold.
- After the third close-and-open, kobukusa should be upside down with the mountain facing away from you, wa on the left.
- Bring back to center and fold like fukusa shin sabaki.
- [Kiyome]
- Generally, unfold the kobukusa. It will be backwards, with the wa on the left. Flip it over with R, then return.
- Chaire
- Kiyome just like oo-meibutsu in shin-no-gyo. Fold completely like shin sabaki, clean the lid, then doubuki with the kobukusa opened up.
- Place the chaire on the ten-ita, then fold the kobukusa up (folded edge should be on the top, busy side with corners etc should be on the bottom at this point).
- Then, flip the kobukusa over.
- Chashaku
- Same as shin-no-gyo, kiyome doing shin sabaki but leaving it open (one less fold than for chaire).
- Kiyome the chashaku “as usual” 3x, then push-pull-pull. After push-pull-pull, you do NOT rewipe! Rehold chashaku, place where it needs to go.
- Then deal with kobukusa. Fold up just like chaire, flip over.
- Dai
- Fold fully into shin sabaki as with chaire.
- Tate, wipe hozuki front-back, then wipe hane front-back just like in daitenmoku.
- Holding nigiriconde in R, put your thumb into the folded edge with L.
- Then with R, reach into the fold and open directly to wa on the right.
- Another way to do this is to do this betsu-betsu, open up then flip, but that feels mendokusai.
- This is one possible way to do it per juuden class, but Glenn was taught to do it this “shortcut” way.
Setup:
- Shoiri
- Furo on left, mizusashi on right, shakutate + kensui in middle just like usual sou kazari furo.
- Chaire in center of daien bon on center of ten-ita.
- Nakadachi
- Bring tenmokujawan in shifuku on dai with chashaku on right side of hane, totally vertical.
- Sit directly in front of daisu at knee line, placing dai combo temae.
- Take kobukusa from kaichuu, place chashaku on folded kobukusa. With R, place kobukusa + chashaku to R of daien bon.
- Spacing here is in thirds - all items are in line laterally, and each sit in the center of one third of the ten-ita.
- Place dai combo to L of daien bon.
- No midare etc. Shittai back 3x, stand with L and exit by backing out.
Temae:
- Bring in sen-zara as in shin-no-gyo. Shin to open the door, sorei at the door. Close door behind you.
- All shin temae are sorei at the door.
- Sit low at temae, placing senzara to himado mae then shikko’ing 3x up to the knee line.
- Betsu-betsu remove hibashi as in shin-no-gyo.
- Senzara to upper knee line tangent.
- These items will all be in a line: fukusa, kensui, senzara, chasen.
- Pull-pull (like gyo-no-gyo) and bring down bon with chaire on it.
- Open chaire shifuku, placing to L side of ten-ita as in shin/gyo-no-gyo.
- While doing all of this, chaire should remain in the center of the bon, even though it’s farther away from your body than you would like.
- Take chashaku + kobukusa combo with R. Place chashaku onto bon at 4:30.
- With an ennosai-bon (large), chashaku points at the center of the bon / chaire.
- With a tantansai-bon (small), chashaku points to the rear of the chaire.
- San-po sabaki for chaire. Kiyome, then place on center front of ten-ita.
- Chaire, chashaku, and kobukusa will all be on the ten-ita front, so laterally center based on where the chashaku and kobukusa lengths will be.
- Re-sanpo sabaki for chashaku. After wiping, rehold 3h and place chashaku gently overhanging from the front of the ten-ita to R of chaire.
- “Spacing should be approximately one chuu-natsume apart for each.”
- Flip kobukusa to correct, place to R of chashaku. Kobukusa bottom edge should be exactly in line with ten-ita edge.
- Take your FUKUSA, sou-yoho sabaki (ie hakobi koicha) and fold sou-sabaki. Wipe the bon ku-tsu-ri-i, then return bon to same place (temae center). Koshi fukusa.
- Momide, chaire to 12 o’clock, then chashaku to 4:30. (Chawan will go in the front space).
- Bring down chawan dai combo and place himado mae. It will be tight!
- Take chawan, place at 6 o’clock on the daien bon. Open shin-musubi as in shin-no-gyo, tying katatomobo, folding in half, and placing to R side of daisu ten-ita to R of kobukusa.
- Take kensui from ji-ita 2h, place below senzara. Remove futaoki from kensui, place slightly forward on ji-ita (same as sou-kazari).
- Take fukusa from belt, sou-sabaki. Close the lid, then refold (using L hand as blade to help). Ko-biki and open the lid, placing on futaoki. Fukusa as-is to below kensui. (Mostly same as shin-no-gyo)
- Pull-pull hishaku from shakutate as in shin-no-gyo. Add half-scoop of water to bowl on bon, place hishaku back on kama ie tori-oki.
- Kosusui, empty, catch drip with ring finger, place back on bon.
- Add more hot water (tori-oki). Place chasen into bowl.
- While chasen soaks, take kobukusa from ten-ita. San-po sabaki and wipe dai. Return kobukusa to its place on the ten-ita.
- Chasentoshi on the bon. Chasen goes SENZARA NO MUKOU, so everything is in a line (not senzara no migi-kata). While placing chasen down, take chakin and pinch side of bowl with chakin as in shin-no-gyo to empty.
- Empty, catch drip with chakin, wipe, place down, tatami-kae, return chakin to senzara.
- Momide, scoop tea etc.
- Usual sukuidashi. “Otoshi-komi” with chashaku (leave in like cereal spoon), and 2x tap on finger.
- Nigiriconde chashaku in R, take kobukusa with same hand. Wipe sanpo-sabaki while holding chashaku nigiriconde. 3x wipe, push-pull-pull. 3h rehold and place chashaku down on bon. Pom-pom kobukusa, then return half-folded to ten-ita.
- Open mizusashi shin-style. Add mizu shin-style (elevator / rectangle / etc), then pour hot water sui-shaku into the bowl (2x pour, but both back to back).
- Make tea on bon, returning chasen to senzara no mukou on completion.
- POINTO: Place chawan onto dai, then turn with chawan + dai combo to kyakutsuki.
- This is UNLIKE daien-no-sou, where you take the dai, turn, then place the chawan on the dai.
- Drink etc like usual. Teishu in hikae, etc. Suikiri, turn and koshi fukusa (NO MIZU).
- Take chawan dai combo back from kantsuki. Turn back to imai, place dai to himado mae, then take chawan and place temae. Sorei, questions etc.
- Add hot water, kosusui, empty, catch drip with ring finger, place back down, ichiyo-oshimai.
- Curious here, no concrete answer. If you’re having usucha in another room, do you say ichiyo oshimai?
- Add mizu, do chasentoshi on bon (if there’s a bon, you use the bon). Return chasen to senzara no mukou, and while there, take chakin and use to support side while emptying water. Wipe etc, tatami-kae, return chakin to senzara. Return chasen as well while your hand is there.
- Yubi-kiri, take shifuku in R and put chawan back into shifuku, tying like nagao.
- Place now-shifuku’d chawan onto dai.
- Momide, then move the chaire to the center of the bon, then place the chashaku 3h to the right of the chaire. Place the bon on top of the ten-ita ie push-push.
- Kobukusa is still up on the ten-ita at this point.
- Take hishaku (NO MIZU), close lid while holding the hishaku (shin ni sou ari), place back in shakutate push-push. Close mizusashi, guest asks for douzo o bon chuu, o shifuku no haiken wo.
- Move futaoki up.
- ALL OF THIS FROM IMAI:
- Pull-pull the bon down to the tatami.
- 3h place the chashaku up on its spot on the ten-ita. While your hand is there, bring the kobukusa down.
- Sanpo sabaki, then kiyome chaire and place it on its home on the ten-ita. Return the kobukusa as well back to its home on the ten-ita.
- Fukusa sou-yoho sabaki and wipe bon ku-tsu-ri-i. Return fukusa to obi.
- Momide, place chaire in center of bon. Chashaku 3h to right of chaire. Chaire shifuku to left of chaire (take from ten-ita with L, rehold and place down with R).
- Take bon, turn to kyakutsuki, turn bon on floor migi-mawari. Place out kantsuki.
- Turn back to imai.
- Dai to ten-ita center.
- While you’re up there, take kobukusa and kaichuu.
- Sen-zara to himado-mae.
- Betsu-betsu hibashi returned.
- Close then is identical to shin-no-gyo (including magemono mizutsugi and shin-nuri nakatsugi).
