Shin no Gyo
Your questions:
- After oshimai, when does the kobukusa go back to kaichuu? I can’t recall if it is after the second addition of oyu (oyu + chasen into bowl → lift bowl onto palm → kaichuu before starting chasentoshi), or after the first (before the kosusui). I feel like it’s the second oyu, but not sure.
THIS IS CORRECT: after the second addition of oyu (oyu + chasen into bowl → lift bowl onto palm → kaichuu before starting chasentoshi),
- When does the chawan/dai go back onto the ten-ita? Is it immediately after putting bowl back into the shifuku, or does the chawan go himado-mae first and it goes to the ten-ita after haiken starts?
THIS IS CORRECT: After the bowl is put back into the shifuku place on dai and tie cord nagao. Then using 3 hands place chashaku on hane and then then chawan/dai back to himadomae.
THIS IS CORRECT:
After putting out dogu for haiken return to imae and place chawan/dai on center of tenita.
Senzara back to himadomae then return hibashi betsubetsu. Then remove kensui and place karioki
Then return futaoki back to its original placePick up senzara and shittai
Then kensui and back out of temaeza.
- For the most part, prior notes + email corrections are complete. Major differences below.
- When entering with the senzara, first sit low, and place the senzara to himado mae from that low position. Then scoot up.
- This is in opposition to at the end! End, pick up and place on R palm before beginning to shittai. Place L on R knee to shittai like in daien-no-sou.
- When opening the kama lid and doing kobiki, first you close the lid! Then do kobiki.
- Making tea, you pour water suishaku into the bowl with tea in it. Then you place the chasen into the bowl (with the dai), THEN move the dai over to himado mae and bring the bowl to you. (note that in ro, you move the dai forward and bring the bowl between you and the dai). Then you knead with your hand on top, then leaving the chasen in, put it back on the dai and bring back to you. THEN nono-ji. (I put the chasen facing to the right, ie how it is when you do this in *kazari temae).
- While guests drinking, nothing to do. Sit hikae the whole time.
- Guest drinking with just one:
- Guest drinks, then on suikiri, they place bowl to the left heri-uchi (with kobukusa). Ask questions from this position, then bring the chawan back to center to clean.
- This gives you a natural time to pause for questions before you do haiken.
- On sweets:
- His preferred would be: Joyo manju (always first no matter what), then the rest is up for debate. Joyo manju → kinton → kisetsumono → saomono → fruits → nuts → nuts
- Rather than downsize everything, make the main ones still the regular size, then downsize the lesser things.
- For hoshigami, supposedly hosts will bring in paper for you to pack your extras. He wasn’t sure how that works, but his thinking was that you could bring it in separately from the fuchidaka like you would chakin-otoshi.
- Q: What exactly is served here? Just kuromoji, or is there some kind of hashi thing?
- Mizu is ONLY added to the kama one time, just before making tea. While guests are viewing the bowl and at the very end of the temae, you do NOT add water.
- This means that at the very end, you take the now-dry hishaku directly and put it away, rather than wetting it and yugaeshi-ing.
- This is because usucha is in another room.
- For pull-pull’ing the hishaku out of the shakutate:
- First time is above the fushi. Second, when it’s tipped partially out of the shakutate, is below the fushi.
- Same thing goes when returning it.
- POINTO: Hishaku should come out the front of the shakutate (6 o’clock).
- POINTO: In any daisu, taking hibashi is like playing operation. But hishaku is not! It just comes out. So his preference is to come straight out the front, then come directly over the kensui and out, rather than to the right of the kensui.
- Note: In gyo-no-gyo and other daisu, his usual (and my usual) is to take hibashi at 12 o’clock and hishaku at 3 o’clock. But some gyotei said to do both at 1:30. So do what makes you happy.
- When returning hibashi, do it stack (LIFO) order. R→L out, then L→R to go back.
