Making sound:
- Konarai and below, always drop hishaku handle.
- If the futaoki is ceramic, do not make sound when striking the futaoki (but still drop).
- Shikaden and above, never make sound at all (neither handle drop nor futaoki strike).
Shin no Gyo
Dougu:
- Shin daisu
- Mayuburo with uroko-bai
- Shinnari-gama
- Karakane kaigu
- Karakane mizusashi
- Karakane shakutate
- Efugo kensui
- Fukinuki futaoki (not hoyasan!)
- Oo-meibutsu tenmokujawan
- Any kind of shifuku
- Shin-nuri dai, soetamono
- Oo-meibutsu karamono chaire
- Wakasa-bon specifically, not haneda or matsu no ki
- With any kind of shifuku
- Senzara
- Shin-chakin
- Shin, fushi-nashi chashaku (zouge)
- Shin chasen (ie, standard chasen for Urasenke)
- Hibashi with full rotational symmetry (pinecones etc, not tori)
- Sashitoshi hishaku
- Shin-nuri nakatsugi
- With one half-sheet of hoshigami
Setup:
- Setup is as usual for furo daisu on ji-ita (kama on left, mizusashi + shakutate + kensui on right). Centered on the ten-ita is karamono on wakasa-bon.
- At nakadachi, bring in tenmokujawan in shifuku, tied with shin-musubi, on dai with chashaku naname on the front of the hane.
- Move chaire + bon to the right half of the ten-ita
- Place tenmoku etc to left half of ten-ita, chashaku still on hane.
- No midare, this setup is considered “perfect”
- Mawari-sado yojohan.
- Daisu is 18 mei from heri.
Atsukai notes:
- Wakasa bon is on the right side of the daisu, so you take it R→L.
- Bon is turned hidari-mawari.
- Tenmokujawan is on the left side of the daisu, so you take it L→R.
- Dai combo is turned hidari-mawari.
- Chawan itself is turned migi-mawari.
- Hishaku is always tori-oki, every single time.
- When emptying green water after the first rinse into the kensui, empty with R (L support). This keeps the guest from seeing the green water.
Temae:
-
Open door (in shin) with senzara to the right, and sorei at the door.
- Shin chakin folding:
- Fold the chakin in half to be the size of a standard chakin. Unsewn side should face you.
- Fold in thirds lengthwise as usual for chakin, then once in half as usual as well.
- Then, instead of folding in quarters, fold in thirds. This will make it stand a little higher on the senzara to prop up the chasen.
- Chakin on the senzara, chasen on the chakin.
- Senzara atsukai:
- When moving it around, pinching 2h from the sides.
- When walking with it, place it on L palm and gently pinch from side.
- Shin chakin folding:
-
Enter with senzara, turn and reclose door.
- Senzara goes geza (upper-left corner of the tatami from this position).
- Close door same way you opened it, in shin.
-
Stand with senzara, sit low at temaeza and shikko 3x.
- QUESTION: Senzara down first right, then shikko? Or himado mae first? Notes say the latter
-
Senzara to himado-mae.
-
Place hibashi on floor betsu-betsu.
- Both hands to floor, then take R hibashi first. Move like usual when you take both hibashi, and turn it in your hands the same way.
- Place hibashi to L of daisu, but don’t push it in yet.
- Do the same with the other hibashi. No need to re-bow necessarily, just do as natural. (R hand is on floor when L is placing hibashi down. Then, both hands go down to take the next hibashi).
- Place next to other hibashi, THEN push in with L as usual for daisu.
-
Now that there is room, move senzara 2h to katte, upper side tangent to the knee line (ie in the corner).
- Chasen will go to migi-kata, fukusa will go to right of senzara. Nothing will go below.
-
Bring karamono + bon down to temae. Open shifuku as usual for karamono on the bon, placing karamono back onto bon once naked, shifuku to same position as gyo no gyo (left side of ten-ita, flipping mizu-no-hou).
-
Shin sabaki, then kiyome chaire as in gyo-no-gyo, EXCEPT open the fukusa during the doubuki.
-
After doubuki, place chaire giri-giri front of ten ita.
- Instead of pulling the shifuku out from the front, maneuver it to the L side (after doing the rehold spider hands stuff), and place down with fukusa supporting from the side.
-
As-is, fold fukusa once more away from you back into standard shin sabaki.
- TODO: Need to try this, it didn’t work exactly when I did it today.
-
Kuni-baki the bon.
- Pick up like usual for a bon (nigiriconde into 2h pickup, hold with L tilted down).
- First wipe is a Z with a loop in the middle going up.
- Second wipe is two straight lines down, L then R.
- After R, bring fukusa around the front, around the back then rehold on side. No wiping of the bottom of the bon.
-
Place bon giri-giri to mizusashi shomen. Koshi fukusa.
-
Momide, place karamono onto bon.
-
Take dai combo down, L → R, and place comfortably at temae.
-
Kiyome chashaku.
- Shin-sabaki, except for the very last fold (leave it one open). Place fukusa in L palm.
- Take chashaku, wipe with shin sabaki 3x in the space where the fold would have gone.
- After 3x, push-pull-pull and refold into sou-sabaki. Wipe one more time.
- 3h rehold, pinching sides, and place to L of chaire to make a “10”.
-
Leave fukusa (still folded in sou-sabaki) by upper-R knee karioki.
-
Open shifuku.
- Exactly the same as the video, except L→R opening when in the hand isn’t the loopy thing, it’s just the usual “open left, then open right”.
-
Return chawan to dai, 2h with L shifuku hand supporting.
-
Tie shifuku into katatombo. Fold over R to L, so opening is on the left side. Give to R hand as-is and place on R front corner of ten-ita, avoiding the karamono on the floor as you go around.
- Note: He said placement for this is the same as in gyo no gyo, ie with the ten-ita divided into eights. Karamono definitely goes into 2nd slot. Does chawan no shifuku go into 7th slot?
-
2h bring kensui forward, then take futaoki out of kensui, place in front-left corner of furo on the ji-ita.
Q: 3h atsukai? Or just 1h? I think 3h.- Pretty sure 3h.
Q: Is this where you bring the kensui forward? I think so, right?- Pretty sure this is correct.
-
Take fukusa, ko-biki lid and open.
- With the fukusa folded in sou-sabaki, wipe exactly as the hiragana “ko”. Keep the fukusa flat, no tilting. This will mean the near half will be used first, then the far half will be used when wiping the near half of the lid.
- Without reholding, and while the fukusa is still by the kama lid, rehold so the tips are down so you can open the kama lid.
- Pinch the part of the fukusa nearest to your thumb, then place the now-dangling part onto the kama lid to flip.
- Kama lid onto futaoki.
-
Fukusa down as-is to R of senzara.
-
Take hishaku.
- Shin style, ie 2h bow down first.
- Pull hishaku twice. First pull, take it high (above the fushi) and pull until it is literally balancing on its own inside the shakutate. Second pull, take from the fushi and pull it out as usual for daisu.
-
Kamae, kagami-bishaku, then take half scoop of water and put into chawan as-is while on dai.
- No fancy water handling here, ie no need to avoid anything in particular or move a particular direction with the hishaku.
-
Kosusui, empty into kensui (which is still in front of you on the ten-ita!). This is as normal for tenmokujawan, ie L holding with R support. Catch drip with ring finger, place onto dai.
-
Add second scoop of water. Place chasen into dai.
-
Move chawan onto kobukusa.
- He said here, he was originally taught to do:
- Move dai forward so it’s giri-giri in front of daisu.
- Take out kobukusa, place and open between dai and yourself.
- Place chawan and chasen combo onto the kobukusa.
- Then wipe dai
- But that sucks for furo. There’s plenty of space to do so for ro, but not in furo. So recently, he learned an alternate way to do it, which is much nicer:
- Leave dai as-is. Place and open kobukusa to himado-mae.
- Place chawan combo onto kobukusa.
- Now you have plenty of space for the dai!
- He said here, he was originally taught to do:
-
Take fukusa from right of senzara, yoho-sabaki and fold into fukumi-bukusa.
- Fukumi-bukusa is exactly the same as in the video. However, the switching between hands thing isn’t a big deal, just do as you feel is natural.
-
Wipe dai with hasami-baki (Q: What’s the name?)
- Overhand just as in the video, first do temae → mukou hozuki, then temae → mukou hane.
- For hane, temae part should be overhand, not underhand.
- On last wipe of mukou hane where you would do a “question mark” style, keep the hasami and actually wipe the entire dai. At the end, come under and do the usual wipe thing to rehold into nigiriconde.
-
Give fukusa to L, pop open, refold into sou sabaki and return to R of senzara.
-
Place kobukusa + chawan + chasen entirely onto dai. Then, take just the chawan + chasen and do chasentoshi in L palm, leaving the kobukusa on the dai.
-
Place chasen to senzara migi-kata. While you’re there, take chakin and support R side of the bowl.
- You… almost pinch the chakin against the R side of the bowl. R thumb should be on the rim of the bowl, not on the chakin (but don’t put your thumb in the udon, just have your thumb on the rim).
-
While chakin is supporting, empty bowl and catch drip. Wipe, place onto kobukusa + dai.
- This chakin is folded in thirds, not quarters. When wiping, place so one third is in the bowl and two-thirds are out of the bowl (ie, long side is hanging out of the bowl).
- Updated: don’t do that. Fold in half. Go back to 3rds when putting back on senzara.
- Otherwise, rest is pretty normal (3.5 wipes, place in, refold, i-ri, place down).
- This chakin is folded in thirds, not quarters. When wiping, place so one third is in the bowl and two-thirds are out of the bowl (ie, long side is hanging out of the bowl).
-
Tatami-kae, and return chakin to senzara.
-
Momide, take chaire and place lid in center of bon like in bondate.
-
Take chashaku from bon, sukuidashi. After scooping, leave the chashaku in the bowl like a cereal spoon.
-
Return chaire to bon.
-
3h rehold chashaku like usual, sabaku (? zigzag), then hit 2x on your index finger (Q: What is this called?)
-
Nigiriconde, wipe chashaku before placing on bon.
- No pom-pom, so you sou-sabaki taking from the bottom and wipe 3x.
- Then push-pull-pull and take from bottom again, wiping 1x.
- Rehold 3h pinching and place back on bon.
-
Return fukusa to its place R of senzara.
- No pom-pom, all of the tea should be on the inside because you took from bottom.
-
With 1h, open mizusashi.
- Thumb on far side of tsumami (ie “backwards”), take lid and 1h just yoink it down to mizusashi shomen.
- This would be a karakane lid, usually with a spherical tsumami, so this is usually less awkward.
- Also, spherical tsumami doesn’t rest nicely against the side of the mizusashi (and same goes for most mitate lids), so this way, lid is not resting with tsumami .
- Thumb on far side of tsumami (ie “backwards”), take lid and 1h just yoink it down to mizusashi shomen.
-
Take hishaku from kama tori-oki, add scoop of cold water.
- Take water, then raise hishaku to the height it will end up being (ie one go above the kama opening).
- Then, angularly move out, over, and in. Do not exit the boundary of the daisu when doing this.
-
Empty cold water into kama, then “suishaku”.
- You only get one shot to knead tea, no kneading then adding more.
- Add one scoop of water, leaving at least 10-20% in the go.
- Return that extra water, then immediately scoop again and add whatever remaining water you need. This is all you get!
-
[Q: tbh a little fuzzy here] Place the chasen into the chawan (with water and tea), move dai combo to himado-mae, then bring kobukusa + chawan etc to temae. Knead from here, L on top. Return chasen to senzara migikata, whole combo onto dai, then take dai and turn to kyakutsuki.
-
In the air, turn the dai hidari-mawari and place out kantsuki. Shittai, hikae.
-
Oshoban:
- After fukukagen, leave and join the other guest.
- Drink as usual. Teishu as last guest, after drinking you move chawan + kobukusa geza without wiping. Shokyaku asks questions from there, with both of you sitting together.
- After asking questions, shokyaku asks for haiken. There, you bring bowl back, wipe, place back etc.
-
Guest part:
- Guest uses host kobukusa to do everything, otherwise is standard for daitenmoku.
- For haiken:
- View whole thing, then take chawan while kobukusa is on dai.
- View chawan, then place back on dai, then scoop kobukusa + chawan up and place to R of dai.
- View die, return stuff to dai, pass.
-
After suikiri, turn back and koshi fukusa.
- No mizu! You would have usucha in a different room, so there is no need to prepare for the next temae. Just leave things and sit.
-
Chawan comes back to kantsuki. Take dai, turn back, place temae, sorei, ask questions.
- Kobukusa is garbage, you do not ask about this.
-
Add oyu, kosusui, empty into kensui primarily with R. Catch drip, place back on kobukusa on dai.
-
Ichiyo oshimai.
-
Add mizu, place chasen into bowl. Take bowl into L palm. While here, before you do anything else, fold kobukusa while on dai in half with R and put in kaichuu.
-
Chasentoshi in your palm. Chasen back to senzara migi kata when done. While there, take chakin and hold against R side like at beginning.
-
Empty, catch drip, wipe, place down, tatami-kae.
-
Return chakin to senzara, then chasen to chakin
(Q: Is this right?) -
Yubi-kiri to get water off your fingers before touching shifuku.
- Start with R overhand, do 3x.
- Try to go the entire length of the index finger(s). Don’t make it look like itsy-bitsy-spider lol.
-
[Q: Fuzzy here as well]Take chawan shifuku with R, place chawan inside and retie like nagao (in bow with 3x loops on either side). -
Chashaku naname into dai
-
[Q: Fuzzy here]Move dai + shifuku’d chawan to himado mae.Or, does this go straight up to the ten-ita?
-
[Q: Fuzzy] Take hishaku, kamae, then return kama-no-futa while holding hishaku.
- “shin ni sou ari”. In shin, we have sou things, such as this movement not being betsu-betsu.
-
Return hishaku to shakutate, futaoki still in its temae position.
- Shin bowing etc as usual.
- Placing it in is also a 2x movement. First, holding on the fushi, place in and let it balance.
- Then, hold above the fushi and complete the movement to place the hishaku in.
-
Return mizusashi lid with 1h, exactly the same motion as opening.
-
“Douzo o karamono, o bon, o chashuku, o shifuku no haiken wo”
-
Move futaoki to L of kensui.
- It would usually go back to its home, but there’s a kensui with used water inside right now. This will be fixed later.
-
Take bon + chaire, turn to kyakutsuki.
- Leave plenty of room in front of you, bon + kobukusa will need to live in the space.
-
Open kobukusa to R of bon.
-
Gyo-sabaki (this was an open, but probably gyo. maybe shin.), kiyome karamono as usual, then place onto kobukusa without turning.
-
As-is, without unfolding anything, use the gyo-sabaki and kuni-baki the bon.
-
Return bon to floor. Pop fukusa open, koshi.
-
Momide, return chaire to bon.
-
Close kobukusa, then move kobukusa to left of bon (not to kaichu).
-
Pick up bon R→L, then in the air, turn hidari-mawari and place out to kantsuki.
-
Place kobukusa on L palm, then turn to imai. Chashaku onto kobukusa, turn back to kyakutsuki, place out kantsuki (te wo suite).
- Everything goes kantsuki!
-
Turn back, take shifuku with L, turn to kyakutsuki, place out to kantsuki, turn to imai.
-
[Q: We missed exact sequence here during temae] 2h take kensui, place just below senzara (below and tangent to knee line). 3h with atsukai, move futaoki back to its home on the jita.
-
Take senzara and place in R palm. Cover R knee with L palm (like daien-no-sou), scoot back. Take kensui in L, exit temaedatami backward.
-
Sit at door, kensui in front of L knee and senzara in front of R knee.
-
Open door in shin, exit with the stuff.
-
Come back, take tenmokujawan (sitting low etc), exit.
- Hold from hane (sides) until you are about to stand. Only then, rehold onto hozuki.
-
Come back with mizutsugi. Sit low etc, same as gyo-no-gyo. Only difference, lid is still placed 1h in shin position. Exit.
-
Come back with kensui. Sit low etc, return futaoki (now with atsukai, it was changed back), place 2h back onto daisu. Now that things are all returned to order, you stand from here instead of backing out.
-
Guest haiken:
- Exactly the same as bondate. Bon is heri-soto, chashaku (on kobukusa) and shifuku are heri-uchi. Do not view the kobukusa. Use your own kobukusa to view the chaire.
- Return dougu to kamiza position, not L/R position.
-
Return with hoshigami + shinnuri nakatsugi, place on daisu, turn and answer questions.
- Nakatsugi should only have one scoop (or one person?) of koicha inside. This chaki is never used to serve tea — it is strictly a formality. Usucha happens in another room.
- Hoshigami should be folded as:
- Take half a hoshigami so you have a square
- Fold up in half
- Fold right in half, slightly off such that R side is lower (L side lower is for funerals).
- Wa (folded half) should be on the left, just like how kami-kamashiki would be in the tokonoma
- Sidebar, kami-kamashiki wa is always facing the katte, ie geza. This would be flipped in a geza-doko.
- Water is at katte (?), fire is at kamiza (?).
- Jiku is a perfect blend of in and yo, because to make the ink, you have a blend of fire and water.
- Walking out with hoshigami is like walking with any bon in gyo and below. Paper is flat on L palm, R supports chaki directly.
-
After questions:
- Bring bon heri-uchi.
- Take chashaku (leaving kobukusa), place onto bon 3h pinching sides. Then, kaichu kobukusa.
- If you forget which order, you cannot take chashaku + kobukusa at first, because the 3h movement would be really hard
- Take shifuku from bottom with R, then rehold with both hands from the side of the cord. Sneak it under the chaire a bit from the front, so the cord is under the chaire body (like you’re trying to slip the whole thing underneath the chaire)
-
Hold bon from sides (L under first, not sure if this is important but it’s what we did) and exit.
- Note: Gyo and below is where you start holding the bon in L palm and chaire in R. For shin, you do not touch the chaire, instead just the bon, else you would need to momide again.
-
Place bon to geza as usual in the door, bow, go sleep.
