The official color of women’s fukusa in Urasenke is red. However, in some of the recent temae books, we see both orange and red used. The chronology goes as follows:
- Women of the Soke use orange fukusa, because they get their fukusa from Yuko. Yuko only makes orange fukusa.
- Seeing this at various events, female practitioners would often request orange fukusa from dougu shops.
- After being asked enough times, Kitamura Tokusai called the gyoteibu and asked for guidance. Their response was that the official color is red, but orange is perfectly acceptable.
In Omotesenke, orange is the preferred color.
