How to do it

From 2023-04-30 Rikyuki with Glenn-sensei. At this Rikyuki, Glenn-sensei served bowl to Rikyu-sama, then continued to serve another bowl to people physically there (chakai).

In the tokonoma, a table (altar?) is placed. On the altar, from left to right:

  • Karakane tsurukubi hanaire
  • Empty space (this is where the chawan will go)
  • Karakane koro
  • Okashi
  • Karakane candle holder

The chawan used in 2023-04-30’s Boston Rikyuki was a red chawan (not raku?) on a shin-nuri dai. They also used a Rikyu-gonomi Sanjuu-dana. On the middle shelf was placed the chawan dai.

NOTE

In a perfect world, the chawan is red raku on a red raku (ceramic) dai.

Procedure

Bring in a second bowl (the one your guest will drink from) and do hira-demae as usual using this bowl until chashaku kiyome. After putting the chashaku down and placing the chasen out, move the bowl to himado-mae, then bring down the chawan + dai for Rikyu.

After bringing the bowl down, open the kama. Add a scoop of water to the bowl (or a half scoop; asking Glenn, he says he doesn’t have a strong opinion), not returning any to the kama (this is for dead people). Then, add two scoops of tea on top of the water. Without whisking, turn to kyakutsuki and place the bowl out, then hikae.

Hanto brings the bowl to the altar and places it in the empty space to the right of the hanaire. Hanto scoots back, then everybody sorei. Hands together in prayer for some time, then sorei again. Teishu then turns back to imai and continues as usual for hira-demae.

NOTE

Kristina and I thought about it. I felt like maybe the offering should happen after you’ve done chasentoshi.

Her point was that you only need the chashaku for the offering. So you should just do what you need to do for the offering (up to and including chashaku), then go straight into the memorial tea. Then, come back and continue warming the bowl etc.

Chato no gi

Apparently, the same is done in chato no gi at Konnichian.

  • Oiemoto will make many bowls of tea. Two bowls of 5 or 6 people each.
  • Setup is with take-daisu, Rikyu’s bowl on the right half of the ten-ita.
  • Procedure is as described above.
