NameJP:: 三島
A heavily-patterned grey and white ceramic. The name literally means Three islands and refers to pottery that came from three islands:
- Taiwan
- Luzon (Philippines)
- Amakawa (Macau?)
The style as it is today comes from a Korean technique that started in the 900s, which is:
- Shape the body
- Carve out the patterned surface
- Fill the divots with a different color clay or slip
- Cover the entire surface in clear glaze
Hanamishima
The most common pattern of mishima is 花三島 (hanamishima).
