Sugitani-sensei

Walking in/out from temaeza

  • There are two possible entrance types (at least for hachijo, probably for all rooms) — massugu or… turning… type. For massugu, the guests will be on the right, so you start with the bon on your left. Always start 16 lines back. Bow, enter. This is all pretty normal, except the guiding rule is pretend you are wearing kimono. You must only more your feet so much as kimono would permit. For turning type, guests will be on your left, so put the bon on the right. Also, when entering in the turning type, your first step isn’t exactly massugu. It’s forward but you turn a little bit once you get into the room. It should feel natural — maybe by the end, you’ve made a 10 or 20 degree turn? You shouldn’t think of it as turning with your feet though — rather, you’re turning with your koshi.
  • Walking to temaeza is all the same. IMPORTANT POINT: when sitting down, descend with both feet together. No scooting or shuffling.
  • When turning around from temaeza, again, pretend you’re wearing kimono and your movement is restricted. When turning right (bon), left foot goes back, but your big toe should stay “in contact” with your right foot. It’s like your big toe is on a track (your left foot), but your heel is allowed to rotate. This should rotate straight back to the corner, finishing with your big toe touching your heel (ish). Right foot, she was less explicit on, but it should keep the same principle. No big swings.
  • When turning left from temaeza (kensui), similar deal. Your left foot should track along your right foot, ending with your left big toe nearly touching your right heel.
  • Lastly, when turning after exiting the room, keep a similar principle. Right (or left) foot covers left (or right) foot, opposite foot tracks backwards to the other foot’s heel, feet meet, then you descend with both legs together.

Bondemae/warigeiko

  • Picking up the bon, first grasp normally and bring it to koshi. Then rehold deeply once it’s at koshi. Thumb should just be touching the rim — it shouldn’t be interior to the bon. Hands should be flat under the bon.
  • Relax your left hand during fukusa sabaki. It doesn’t need to be tightly gripping the fukusa.
  • After making ichimonji, be sure to point your left hand down along the fukusa rather than straight forward.
  • Sugitani-sensei has us take the index finger out right away for purifying natsume. Maybe teacher’s preference.
  • She also says don’t push/pull on the top of the natsume. Also teacher’s preference?
  • Also, when a hand isn’t doing anything, she pulls it completely back to her hip. Also teacher’s preference?
  • When reholding the fukusa at the end after it’s been folded (ie you traced the line, now you need to take it from your left hand), take it deeply. Don’t pinch.
  • Question: when you place the fukusa on your left palm with tips up, that’s in the center of your body right
  • Chasentoshi things
    • Picking up chasen, grab just below the fushi.
    • Place into the bowl without rotating it, ie with the knot facing you (not facing up).
    • When you pick up the chasen, your index finger and thumb should be parallel with each other, not perpendicular (as they would be if you curved your hand underneath). It should be easier to hold this way.
  • Sugitani-sensei says you don’t need to cover the base when pouring out with your left hand, just need to use your first two fingers on the inner lip of the chawan. This could be a teacher’s preference thing.
  • Wiping with chakin, this was revelatory. When wiping, don’t pinch and wipe. Push your thumb around the inner edge, and let the index finger follow. This keeps it from bunching up.
  • Also, pay more attention to chakin refolding when you put it back in the bowl. It’s not a technical difference, just something I should do better.
  • Also holy shit she’s so good at manipulating chashaku. All of the different positions, she can get there directly (instead of scooting). Like to go from picking up from the bon to nigiriconde, she does that in one step. Amazing. Work on this.
  • Lastly, the lid of the natsume should go to the right of the bowl instead of in front of the bowl, and the chashaku should be on the outer-right side of the bowl.
