This comes from suzuki.

Canonical teaching for koicha is:

  • Wait until the bowl gets back to the teishu.
  • After sorei, ask questions.
    • For Konarai, continue adding water and dumping while answering questions.
    • For Shikaden and up, pause after the sorei to answer questions, then continue.

Note that glenn teaches that you should pause all the time, including in Konarai.

suzuki ‘s way, which I love and will to teach, is to ask about the chawan while you are looking at it.

  • This allows you to look at things called out by the teishu.
  • Also, all guests down the line will have this information in their heads while they view the bowl.

We did not talk about how this applies to Shikaden and up, but glenn’s feeling is that for higher temae, questions should still happen after the sorei. I agree. Feels too casual otherwise.
