Notes
- TODO In satsubako, do you make sound with the hishaku? ask-glenn ➕ 2023-09-22 ✅ 2023-09-24
- Confirmed below with Sarah Stewart — yes.
- TODO In satsubako, do you turn the box L or R at the end for haiken? ask-glenn ➕ 2023-09-22 ✅ 2023-09-24
- Confirmed below with Sarah Stewart — turn R, as it is R handling when empty.
- [?] TODO Chasen Kazari, if you display flower vase, how to show it in toko? ➕ 2023-09-23
Confirmed with Sarah Stewart for Satsubako:
- At the end when you turn the box out for haiken, that is migi-mawari (i.e. matching your hand movement).
- Kyaku turns the box on the ground.
- Lid during kyaku haiken follows shokyaku/renkyaku rules. Stays flat on the ground, with shokyaku placing up and renkyaku placing down.
- This is a konarai temae, so:
- Do make sound with the hishaku when you drop it (following kazari futaoki rules)
- Only one sweet (but she has heard of people doing more, as it’s a lot of tea so more in your stomach is good)
Kimura Sokei’s thoughts on some things (from Sarah Stewart):
- Less is more when it comes to speaking.
- Don’t say “ichiyo oshimai itashimasu.” Just say “oshimai itashimasu”. Ichiyo is too informal of a Japanese word to use in this context.
- At opening, don’t say ippukusashi agemasu, and at close, don’t say shitsurei itashimasu. Just bow silently, and let the words be in your heart.
