Gyo no Gyo

  • Imai is half-way between daisu corner and sotozumi (projected onto the heri).
    • You don’t need to worry about dougu positioning w.r.t. kinindatami heri. Your left knee should still be tangent to the heri, but placing dougu out at temae, it should go beyond the heri tangent.
  • Daisu setup
    • General advice is for each set (shakutate + kensui, mizusashi) to be centered in its respective half.
    • Aesthetics are more important though. Can move things around if the dougu is too big/small/looks awkward.
    • 18 mei from heri! Otherwise too close!
  • Midare
    • Midare is shakutate moving laterally to the center of the ji-ita.
    • Moving into midare, do nakadachi as usual (placing things on bon), then without shikko, move shakutate.
      • Both hands down ie hibashi, then R only moves shakutate to center. Nothing fancy.
      • On completion, sit back up ie hishaku (no returning to bow).
    • Moving out of midare, undo positioning after returning kensui to its place on the ji-ita at the very end.
  • Opening
    • Hakkebon movement on ten-ita, it should end so the bon kodai is giri-giri against the edge of the ten-ita (not the lip of the top).
    • When taking hibashi out, they come completely around the kensui. Not straight!
    • Chaire goes to center, chawan goes to tenmokuza.
    • Taking the kensui, 2h → 1h as usual, except chawan is in the way.
      • He wasn’t sure if he goes completely over, or if he slightly biases left. Certainly, he goes left when moving futaoki.
      • I prefer moving left a bit, even if just spiritually avoiding. Feels better to me.
  • Kiyome
    • Take chawan/chaire from imai position (no turning). Chaire goes back to same center position.
    • For water double-scoop for chawan, hishaku stays in the kama after the first scoop. Fukusa is also by right knee at this time — hishaku and fukusa will be close.
    • Turning to take water, the chashaku will be very close when you bow for hishaku. I scoot back slightly when I turn to make room, that is okay.
    • Tenmoku goes onto ji-ita in kensui position when warming.
    • Chasen still goes out to position right of robuchi, even though you never put hishaku there.
      • Likewise, it still goes kensui-no-kata position when used.
    • Fukusa stays by R knee until making tea. When you turn to take hishaku to make tea, you take the fukusa with you on L palm.
    • Fukusa placement by kensui
      • It should be RIGHT of the kensui.
      • But undecided whether it sits tangent above the knee line, or below the knee line. Apparently old-school teaching is below, but some Glenn juuden students have been taught above.
      • Above is the only way that works for me, otherwise things are far too close. No room.
  • Serving tea
    • Tea is served from KYAKUTSUKI, bisecting the robuchi.
    • Because you are placing bowl to kantsuki, you can hold hane straight from 9oclock / 3oclock, and you can come completely over the lid.
      • Bowl placement is still R of lid. I did so bowl is tangent to edge of lid, but hane crosses into the lateral space of the lid.
    • Hoyasan placement during nakajimai (?) while guests are drinking, no concrete answer (either in kensui position, or in more front position ie furo). Kensui position makes more sense to me, because front position is fulfilled by placement on tatami.
    • When taking fukusa from imai to open lid, you just take it right from there.
      • Yes, it’s asymmetric that you will then place it on your palm and turn with it. It makes life less mendokusaii though, so be okay with it.
  • Shimai
    • Nothing major, just follow above stuff.
  • Haiken
    • Reminder, you only ask for karamono, THEN ask for others. This and karamono are the only two temae like that.
    • To do any haiken things (kiyome for chaire, placing chashaku / shifuku out), you must do it while completely outside the robuchi.
      • It sucks.
      • This is what you do for all okuden.
      • This means you have both scoot as well as pivot.
      • Practically though, because you’re placing all dougu out at kantsuki, it is much easier to do so from that position than from bisecting the robuchi.
    • Mizutsugi, place it in the center between your knee line and daisu (not front of daisu). Also place horizontally straight-up center. Then shikko forward diagonally to do stuff. (but first sitting position is centered).
