  • Regarding sensu from Iwama-sensei: shiratake should always be used in a student situation, irrespective of your own rank. When you are teaching (or I guess when you are in chakai etc, didn’t say), you can use lacquered fan. There is no difference between tamenuri and shinnuri - use whichever one makes you happy. No rule like you can only use one at junkyoju etc.
  • Regarding fukusa from Iwama-sensei: apparently red fukusa are a new invention, and orange fukusa are older / more formal. Gengensai started sado gakkou (?), and for that, he created the red fukusa. Nowadays, we see all of the women etc at gakuen using red. So red is the standard at Urasenke, especially in a learning context. She uses red during her okeiko with Shirahase sensei. But when she is teaching, she uses orange, because it is more formal / the original. Omotesenke also uses orange, because in general they didn’t experience much change. (I didn’t entirely understand all of this — it feels to me like sensu though. There is a standard we do at Urasenke, but when you are in your own teaching context, you have more flexibility and can take more liberties. Orange is perfectly acceptable to use because it was the original color)
